Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. CAP’s Cadet Program is a year-round, positive enrichment activity for youth interested in aviation, space, cyberspace, and the military. Our cadets also develop self-discipline and leadership skills under the guidance of of responsible adults. Cadet Great Start transforms ordinary youth into Cadet Airmen in 6 short weeks.

The goal of Cadet Great Start is to provide new cadets with an exciting, comprehensive, and educationally sound introduction to the CAP Cadet Program, enabling them to succeed quickly.

It is very important that cadets do not miss any days during Cadet Great Start to ensure they earn their promotion at Week 6. Please see complete schedule below.

What are the requirements?

Civil Air Patrol cadets make a commitment to the organization and themselves, and all cadets are held to a high standard of professionalism and appearance.

  • Age 12 through 18 (initial membership), cadets may continue through age 20.
  • Enrolled in, or graduated from, a private, public, home school or college program with a satisfactory record of academic achievement.
  • Not a member of the active duty Armed Forces. Does not include Guard or Reserve personnel.
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America, or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence.
  • Good moral character.
  • If former cadet, must not have been terminated for misconduct.

Cadets must also meet Grooming and Appearance Standards and Physical Fitness Standards.

How much does it cost?

Here at Bakersfield Composite Squadron 121, we have decided to take an advanced approach to ensure our cadets receive the best initial training and orientation to the cadet program, by implementing this Great Start training. For our new cadets, the initial cost upon beginning the Cadet Great Start training program is $200.00. This is a one-time cost, and the amount includes:

  • First year CAP annual membership dues ($40.00)
  • Airman Battle Uniform* or ABU ($120.00)
  • One-time Great Start program fees ($40.00)
    • Instructional materials and supplies, CAP t-shirt, field day lunch

The annual cadet membership dues will continue at $40.00, paid directly to National Headquarters via the member’s online service site, eServices. Cadets will receive a reminder about 90 days before their membership expires each year.

*The Airman Battle Uniform (or ABU) is the first required uniform for all cadets. Your purchase includes: ABU Coat, ABU Trouser, ABU Cap, ABU Belt, Sand T-Shirt, Boot Bands (2 pair), “Civil Air Patrol” Uniform Tape, Name Tape, plus Cadet Airman Grade Insignia and Gen. Curry Achievement Ribbon upon promotion. It does not include Black Combat Boots that must be purchased separately.

Cadet Benefit! Upon completion of the Great Start training program and Achievement 1, Civil Air Patrol will send each cadet a $100.00 voucher to assist with the purchase of the Blues uniform. Learn more during Welcome & Orientation night.

*Additional costs may include different schools, activities, and camps offered throughout the year, and additional uniform items as the cadet progresses through the program. Financial assistance may be available for some costs, please complete your information during registration. You will be contacted if necessary.

Great Start Flight Training Schedule

Week 1 

  • Tuesday, October 2  17:30 – 21:00 (5:30 to 9:00 PM) (Welcome & Orientation)
    • Uniform: Black T-Shirt (tucked-in), Blue Jeans w/ Belt
    • Parent(s) Required
  • Saturday, October 6 9:00 Am to 3:00 PM – FIELD DAY

Week 2 

  • Tuesday, October 9 18:30 – 21:00 (Foundations)
    • Uniform: Black T-Shirt (tucked-in), Blue Jeans w/ Belt
  • Saturday, October 13 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM FIELD DAY

Week 3

  • Tuesday, October 16 18:30 – 21:00 (Foundations Continued & Membership)
    • Uniform: PT (Physical Training)

Week 4

  • Tuesday,  October 23 –  18:30 – 21:00 (Review & Testing)
    • Uniform: Black T-Shirt (tucked-in), Blue Jeans w/ Belt

Week 5

  • Tuesday, November 6 – 18:30 – 21:00 (Feedback, Re-Testing & Promotion Practice)
    • Black T-Shirt (tucked-in), Blue Jeans w/ Belt
    • Parents Must Attend – Official membership Processing

Week 6

  • Tuesday, November 13 – 18:30 – 21:00 (Promotions and Pre-Flight Activity)
    • Uniform: ABU (Airman Battle Uniform)
    • Parents, family, and friends welcome and encouraged to attend!
  • Saturday November 17 (Scheduled after completion of 6 weeks) 07:30 – 12:30 (Orientation Flights)
    • Uniform: ABU (Airman Battle Uniform)
    • Subject to change. Scheduled flight times will vary per cadet TBD

After completing the six-week Great Start program, cadets will continue to meet each Tuesday night, from 18:30-21:00.

Remember: It is very important that cadets do not miss any days during Cadet Great Start to ensure they earn their promotion at Week 6.
